We are currently archiving the personal papers and effects of Major Edwin A. Sherman. In addition to being an American pioneer in California, Sherman was one of the movers and shakers of the fraternity in the state—especially the Scottish Rite.

One of Sherman’s hallmark characteristics was an abiding devotion to the Union and President Lincoln—so much so that he devoted much of his time to preserving Lincoln’s legacy. His collection is rife with Lincoln memorabilia, including this recently rediscovered April 15, 1865 edition of the New York Herald announcing Lincoln’s assassination.
